The Library is exploring the possibility of building a new library. We hope these FAQ’s will help answer some of your questions. If you would like more information, we encourage you to attend our next Site Plan Meeting on June 8th at McCordsville Town Hall.
Why does FVTPL need a new building?
Since 1986, the Fortville-Vernon Township Public Library (FVTPL) has been operating at its 7,950 square foot location. This facility is too small to adequately serve the rapidly growing Fortville, McCordsville and unincorporated Vernon Township area.
The Library sits on less than one acre and is landlocked. Parking is extremely limited, constraining the construction of an addition to the existing building. Further, any addition or expansion to the existing building will require the building to adhere to current building codes. The age of the building and site constraints make an expansion all but impossible.
Many residents in the area are unaware that the Library exists to serve them. To that end, a Task Force was created by the Library’s Board of Trustee to analyze the issues facing FVTPL. Through discussions with the community and its’ stakeholders, it became clear that the current Library is insufficient to serve the community.
How does the current building impact the community?
The Library is working to expand programs and services to meet the needs of the community. Our regular storytime puts us close to max capacity on a regular basis and without a separate programming room, it can be very loud in the rest of the library. We offer many of our programs off-site because we cannot accommodate larger groups of people. We have had several programs with attendance well over 100 people. We would like to offer more high-interest programs, but finding off-site accommodations limits the frequency we are able to offer events.
We are also at capacity for adding bookshelves. We cannot increase our collection size to meet the needs of a growing community without additional space to house these items. We would also love to offer a Library of Things, but lack the space to store the items.
Additionally, we do not have any meeting or individual study spaces available. Community members call weekly requesting this service. There is a clear need for this in our growing community.
Where will the new Library be located?
The Library Board and director conducted a search for available, affordable, feasible land over a period of many months. This was narrowed down to a few options and the board requested site plans for these sites. The site plans will provide information about the size of a potential building, as well as the associated costs. Once site plans are available, the Board will share the information with the public for feedback. No site has been selected and no site will be selected without ample opportunity for community members to share their thoughts on the options.
How will this affect my taxes?
If a new Library is to be constructed within the Vernon Township area, a bond will be necessary to help fund the construction. It is important to note that due to the unique manner in which the Library is funded, bonding will NOT RAISE TAXES or impact the funding received by any other governmental agency within the Township. This will be discussed in greater detail at planned events showcasing the site plans. If you have specific questions, please send an email to the Library.
What will the new Library look like?
The library hosted a focus group and conducted a survey of residents to solicit feedback on what you want and need in your library. The priorities identified from this are:
- Larger collection
- Larger, more inviting children’s area
- Meeting and study rooms available for public use
- Increased programs for all ages
- Welcoming, inviting interior
We will have more opportunities for the community to provide feedback on design elements after a final site decision is made.

How can I get more information or get involved?
We have scheduled two public Site Plan Meetings to provide an overview of the planning process, explore how we will fund the project, discuss the site plans, and, most importantly, listen to public feedback. The first meeting will be held on May 31st at 6:30 pm at MVCSC Admin Center and next meeting will be June 8th at 6:30pm at the McCordsville Town Hall.
